The Carol G. Simon Cancer Center was founded in April 1998. At the time state-of-the-art Siemens equipment, including dual-energy linear accelerators, 3D conformal radiation therapy, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), and High Dose Rate Brachytherapy were utilized.

In July 2000, with the installation of a Somatom CT scanner, the FOCAL (Fusion of CT scanner and Linear accelerator) treatment was incorporated, which combines the use of diagnostic quality CT images and high energy x-rays to pinpoint tumor location and minimize dosage to uninvolved tissue. This new treatment modality with advanced image guidance has been successfully utilized in the management of several types of malignancies.

The very impressive long term follow-up of our patients has led us to move ahead to further our clinical advancement with the latest addition of the second generation of the FOCAL system. The new system consists of a Siemens ONCOR Advant Garde and a 16-slice Somatom Sensation CT scanner. The ultra-fast CT scanner provides superb diagnostic quality CT images within seconds for efficient precise tumor localization. This unique combination of state-of-the-art CT scanner and accelerator allows Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) to be employed most efficiently and precisely.

Our dynamic team of physicians received ivy-league educations and are board certified. Their approach to treating cancer is on the cutting edge utilizing the most advanced therapies available in the radiation oncology field. All members of our multidisciplinary care team have been specially trained to provide the highest level of care.

All RADIATION ONCOLOGISTS in the Department of Radiation Oncology are board certified Radiation Oncologists and proficient in the most recent developments in cancer treatment. The Radiation Oncologist plans, directs and monitors patient treatments throughout the course of radiation therapy.

MEDICAL PHYSICISTS are board certified professionals that ensure the safety, precision and accuracy of the equipment throughout the course of treatment.

DOSIMETRISTS are board certified professionals that create and design treatment plans that target the site of disease while sparing the normal, surrounding tissue utilizing computer algorithm modeling.

RADIATION THERAPISTS assist the Radiation Oncologist in setting up the approved plan of treatment. They accurately reproduce this plan and administer the radiation daily. Therapists with specialized education and experience in radiation oncology are registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and are licensed by the State of New Jersey.

RADIATION ONCOLOGY NURSES are  certified by the Oncology Nursing Society®.  They have specialized training in cancer treatment.  They provide information regarding radiation treatment and side effects.

American College of Radiology (ACR) Accreditation

The Radiation Oncology Department was accredited by the Committee on Radiation Oncology Accreditation of the Commission on quality and
safety. This accreditation is extremely important for the Department
of Radiation Oncology since it represents the standard of excellence in our field.
